With the year coming to a close, I love reflecting on my favorite yarns of the year and some new yarns that I’ve been wanting to try! This post is sure to give you some yarn and crochet inspiration for your next project. I’ve picked out 5 new yarns to try in the new year that I think you’ll love. Some are yarns that I can’t wait to work with again, and others have been on the top of my list to design with for a while now!
In this post, you’ll find a mix of worsted weight, fingering weight, and a little variety of colors and textures to choose from! They’re all from WeCrochet, which is my favorite place to shop for yarn because they have an amazing selection of the most gorgeous fibers and colors, all at affordable prices. New yarns often help inspire me to come up with new ideas for crochet patterns, so I hope these bring you some knit and crochet inspiration too.

Twill
Twill has been one of my favorites for a while now, so I had to include it at the top of this list! It’s a worsted weight, 100% superwash merino with a 3-ply twist that feels like it came straight from a luxury yarn store. WeCrochet recently added a few colors to this yarn line and I am loving the Sea Salt Heather and Rose Heather colors!
The stitch definition is beautiful and has a little touch of sheen to it, that’s not shiny, but just adds a little softness to your project. It’s also a machine washable yarn, which makes it a great choice for all kinds of projects from hats and cowls, to sweaters and blankets!
Keep in mind that Twill comes in a hank. Before using yarn in a hank, you’ll need to wind it by hand into a ball, or use a ball winder and swift to wind it into a cake before using it. I’ve been using the same ball winder and swift for years and it makes this process super fast and easy!
Pattern Ideas:
- Rebel Cowl: This is a free, beginner-friendly pattern that I designed using Twill. It’s simple, yet versatile so you can play around with colors!
- Glacier Beanie: This classic ribbed beanie is the perfect hat for everyone! It’s one of my most popular patterns and works great with any worsted weight yarn!
- Half n Half Infinity Scarf: The Half n Half Infinity Scarf is another easy, free pattern that’s perfect for the absolute beginner.
- Pebble Cardi: The Pebble Cardi is one of my top selling patterns, and it’s not hard to see why! It’s an easy, classic cardigan design with a modern fit and style.
Twill Fingering
There’s a new yarn in the Twill family, Twill Fingering weight! I was so excited to see when WeCrochet added this fingering weight version of Twill earlier this year. It has the same 3-ply twist, fiber content, and washability as the worsted version, but it comes in a skein with a center pull so it’s ready to use right out of the box!
I love the look of how the original worsted weight works up, but the stitches of Twill Fingering are absolutely beautiful. It gives such a pretty definition to your stitches, which you can see in the video review of this yarn!
Pattern Ideas:
- Amble Shawl: The Amble Shawl is forever one of my favorite patterns and would be so much fun to make with colors from this yarn!
- Endless Infinity Scarf: Want something mindless? This free pattern is the perfect pattern to put on cruise control and stitch away!
- Scout Kerchief: This small, but mighty free pattern is perfect for spring and summer when you want a cute accessory to throw on!
- Venture Shawl: This pattern was one of my biggest hits of the year and would be such a fun adventure to make with this yarn!
Alpaca Cloud Fingering
I’ve been wanting to work with Alpaca Cloud yarn for ages! Alpaca is one of my favorite fibers because it’s super soft and warm. It’s slightly warmer than wool and is hypoallergenic, so if you have any issues with wool fibers, definitely give alpaca a try!
Alpaca Cloud is a fingering weight made of 100% super fine alpaca. Like Twill, it comes in a hank so you’ll want to wind it up before using it. This yarn is handwash only and you’ll want to lay it flat to dry.
This yarn is so soft and cozy and would give gorgeous drape to your project. A lot of fingering weight patterns use a merino wool, but I would totally use Alpaca Cloud to give your project a little extra softness and drape.
Pattern Ideas:
Add extra softness and drape to these fingering weight patterns with Alpaca Cloud Fingering!
- Amble Shawl: Add extra coziness and drape to the Amble Shawl with Alpaca Cloud!
Snuggle Puff
Snuggle Puff is unlike anything you’ve ever felt before. It’s a 70% Pima Cotton and 30% Nylon fiber, but what makes it special is the way it’s made. The cotton fibers are blown into a nylon mesh, which gives you the most buttery soft yarn ever. It’s a heavy worsted or aran weight yarn, so you could even use it for some worsted weight patterns. It comes a great variety of neutrals, with some fun pops of color so you can use this for all kinds of projects!
Snuggle Puff is machine washable, but I would prefer to handwash it to keep it looking new longer. My first instinct with this yarn would be to make baby items, but I would love to have a scarf or cowl in this for myself!
Pattern Ideas:
- Lullaby Baby Blanket: This blanket would be the ultimate snuggly, soft blanket with Snuggle Puff!
- Little Ombre Blanket: Try out a few colors to make the Little Ombre Blanket with an extra squish!
- Baby Hats: You could adapt a hat pattern, like the Vintage Flannel Beanie to make the most adorable, soft baby hat!
Felici Worsted
Felici has been around for a long time, and WeCrochet added a worsted weight version into their line up! Felici Worsted is a self striping yarn so the yarn does all the work of changing colors for you. It’s machine washable, so definitely a low maintenance yarn.
I’ve used the fingering weight version of Felici before and LOVED the way the stitches worked up, and the worsted weight version did not disappoint – my stitches looked amazing! I would recommend finding a color that speaks to you and then finding the perfect project for it!
Pattern Ideas:
- Half n Half Infinity: With Felici, this free pattern would be even easier because you can just crochet in the round and let it change colors for you!
- Rebel Cowl: Imagine using Felici Bare for the main color/background of this cowl and the self striping colors for the stripes! It would be so cute!
- Vintage Flannel Beanie: This pattern was made for colorful yarns and would compliment this self striping yarn beautifully.
