Step into nature with this stunning asymmetrical cowl. Named for its woodsy vibes and rustic charm, you’ll feel right at home in the outdoors with the Sylvan Cowl.
I’ve been wanting to design an asymmetrical crochet cowl like this for years and the Sylvan Cowl is everything I dreamed of! The asymmetrical shape combines the cute triangle shawl aesthetic with the ease and functionality of a cowl. I love how comfortably this crochet cowl sits on my shoulders, staying perfectly in place while I explore the outdoors.
The Sylvan Cowl crochet pattern is worked flat on the bias, which adds that little *something special* to its beautiful texture and asymmetrical cowl shape. The unique construction will be a breeze with lots of visual elements in the pattern like a stitch diagram, schematic, and more, to help set you up for success! This pattern works up delightfully quick and by the time you finish one, you’ll already be planning for the next.
The design was crafted with a beautiful new Lion Brand yarn that is made with 100% USA wool. It’s such a treat to work with and feel all the woolly goodness between your fingers. And just wait until you block it – it gets even better!

Local Grown Yarn
Lion Brand made my dreams come true with their new Local Grown yarn and I felt so honored to get to design with it before it was released! So what makes this yarn so special? Local Grown is a 100% USA wool! That means this wool fiber is not only grown from sheep in the US, but it is dyed and spun in US mills too. How amazing is that?!
The Sylvan Cowl uses about 350 yards of Local Grown yarn, with 100% US wool (a non-superwash wool) making up this worsted weight (4) yarn. I used the “Barn” colorway, which is a stunning rusty caramel shade. This yarn is a little on the heavier side of worsted weight, which gives your cowl the perfect amount of squish!
The Magic of Non-Superwash Wool Yarn
If you’ve never worked with non-superwash wool yarn before, you’re in for a real treat! Non-superwash wool is known for how well it helps regulate your temperature, keeping you cozy while still being breathable to avoid overheating. You’ll also find non-superwash wool yarn has great memory, meaning it bounces back and retains its shape after blocking (unlike it’s superwash counterpart that has a tendency to “grow” when wet blocked). I find it’s so worth it to wet block your non-superwash wool projects because it allows the wool fibers to bloom and relax, giving your project with beautiful drape and added softness.
Local Grown has beautiful stitch definition, with a plump and squishy texture. It’s the perfect yarn to give your You can really feel the difference working with 100% US wool with this plump and squishy fiber. This yarn combines a classic wool with a timeless color palette, making this the perfect yarn to give your next project an heirloom look and feel.

Don’t forget these!
There’s a few other things you’ll need for this pattern! You’ll need a US H/8 5mm Crochet Hook (these are my fav!) or the hook size needed to get gauge as listed in the pattern. You’ll also want to have a few stitch markers, scissors and a tapestry needle.
I recommend wet blocking this project to really unlock the *magic* of a non-superwash yarn like Local Grown. Blocking will help the wool fibers bloom and relax, which makes your finished piece even more soft and comfy! These blocking mats are my favorite to use for wet blocking, or you can steam block if you prefer.
