The story continues… with the Short Story Scarf! This beginner-friendly crochet pattern features stunning texture, big stripes, and a personal favorite of mine – mini skeins!
Ever since I released my One More Chapter Infinity Scarf, I’ve wanted to grow this scarf family… Which brings us to the Short Story Scarf! This design began as a special edition with Sewrella Yarn to coincide with the Countdown to Rhinebeck boxes and Make-a-Long (more on that below!) and has served as a reminder that we are always growing, learning, and adding new chapters to our stories.
The Short Story Scarf pattern includes a mini video tutorial to walk you through to show you how to create a straight, nearly invisible seam. Another exciting perk of this pattern is you don’t need to weave in the ends between color changes! Since this scarf has a tube construction, you’ll tuck the ends from each color change inside the scarf – so no need to weave them in!

The Inspiration: Rhinebeck
This collaboration was inspired by Rhinebeck and the famous NY Sheep & Wool Festival, among the other festivals during the fall each year. The Countdown to Rhinebeck box and Short Story Scarf were created to help bring the experience to makers near and far, to experience a taste of what the event is all about.
Last year, I attended Rhinebeck for the very first time and it was absolutely magical. Not only do you get to be surrounded by sheep, wool, and all kinds of yarn, but the talent of each vendor and attendee will blow you away. Everywhere you turn, you’ll see folks wearing handmade items that are truly pieces of art.
There are tons of people that make a “Rhinebeck Sweater” where they make a special sweater to wear at Rhinebeck! While this is AMAZING, I didn’t want to overcommit by trying to make an entire sweater before attending last year. I decided I wanted something a little more casual and low-stress, so I decided to wear one of my favorite projects: the One More Chapter Infinity Scarf. Not only was this a lower commitment than a sweater, I loved that it was a versatile piece that I could wear no matter what the weather was. Last year, it rained the whole weekend, so I was in boots and a raincoat, and my scarf was the perfect addition to my outfit!
My absolute favorite part of attending Rhinebeck was meeting so many friends and talented makers in the community. One of the highlights for me was finally getting to meet Ashleigh, Brooke, CJ, and some of the Sewrella Yarn team! This year, I’m *hoping* to get to go again and will absolutely be wearing my Short Story Scarf!!
Get Your Mini Skeins Ready!
This pattern uses 15 mini skeins for a total of 1,200 yards of fingering (1) weight yarn. This pattern is pictured in Sewrella Yarn‘s Autumn Tonal colorways. Grab these minis when they’re back in stock in September to make yours just like the crochet sample, or create something all your own! Start by shopping your stash or pick out something all new to create the perfect striped infinity scarf.
If you’d prefer to use full size skeins, you could also make this scarf with 3 (100g) skeins of fingering weight yarn!

Planning Your Colors
Once you have your 15 mini skeins picked out for this project, it’s time to plan the order of your colors! I like to play around with the palette by adding pops of contrast within the color order.
Want to know my secret for planning for colors? Once you’ve put your colors in order, arrange them into a circle. This allows you to see how the colors will look once they’re all worked up and seamed into the final scarf!
The Sister Patterns
If you liked my One More Chapter Infinity Scarf pattern, you’ll love the Short Story Scarf! The Short Story Scarf features the same beautiful texture and easy tube construction as the One More Chapter Infinity Scarf but with MORE mini skeins. The Short Story Scarf gives all the big sister vibes with larger stripes, less color changes, and extra width to make this scarf extra cozy.
Did you know there’s a knit version of this pattern? You can find the knit version of the Short Story Scarf from Sewrella or on Ravelry here. The knit version uses DK weight mini skeins and creates a gorgeous looking sister pattern!
Join the Make-a-Long
Join me in this Make-a-Long (MAL) in October! This MAL will take place October 1-15, 2024 in the weeks leading up to Rhinebeck, though you’re welcome to get a headstart if you’d like more time! I’m SO excited to be crocheting a Short Story Scarf with everyone in the MAL and I’ll be seeing the colorways for the first time with you then!!
This MAL features both the crochet and knit version of the Short Story Scarf. Whether you’re going for the Countdown to Rhinebeck box for the ultimate surprise, using the Autumn Tonals like the crochet sample, or making a unique palette of your own – remember, you can use any 15 mini skeins you’d like!
